SkyDome 2006 – SloPitch Mania runs wild!

By | January 8, 2006

This is the 1st year Sonia and I have gone down to the SkyDome to participate in the ‘Round the Clock SloPitch Tournament in Toronto.  Tina has put together a team that consists of mainly members from the 2005 reigning NCR champions and/or from the 2003 championship team.  These members would be:  Sonia, Jay, Tina, Kaastra, Joey, Amy, Josh, Nancy and Roach.  In addition, we stole Debbie from the Flyers and have Vicki and her boyfriend as well.We brought Sonia’s parents along to help take care of Olivia.  It was a fantastic weekend but very tiring.  We played three games:

Game 1:  1:00pm Friday – lost 13 – 7

Game 2:  4:00am Saturday – won 7 – 3

Game 3:  6:00pm Sunday – won 3 -2

We lost to eventual division winners.  There were 16 divisions so no wild cards.  Unfortunately a couple of errors and a couple of walks cost us game 1.  We easily had a chance to beat that team – nothing special there.   Next year we can go in knowing the format and the elements.

Playing on the turf was great.  The bounces were true and clean.  Except that with the spongy ball, the hops did tend to go a little high.  The rule of thumb for hitting is:  hit liners into the gaps.  Watch it roll way into the next field of play.  Fly balls tend to get tracked down easily as there is no wind and the teams play all guys deep.

The off-the-field summary:

Friday:  Went to Steam Whistle Brewery for Tour (see post) with Kaastra, Josh, Sam and Joey.  Had dinner at Hard Rock.  Slept early to be able to play 4:00am game.  NOTE:  try to get 11th or 10th floor.  Any floor with rooms looking onto field are going to be loud.

Saturday:  Lounged till noon.  Didn’t do much till after game.  Went to Texas Armadillo for dinner and played poker till 1:00am for fun.  We will try not to bring Olivia next year simply to allow for more flexibility and enjoyment of the event itself.  It was great to have her along but we were very limited (especially Sonia) as to what we could do.
