Mexico laugh

I’m still whipping up some experiences from our 2nd trip to Sandos Carocal. But I gotta give a nod to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

The resort has a multitude of approx 2 feet ebony Mayan carved statues of little pigs scattered throughout the property. Christien started noticing them one day and exclaimed whilst sitting upon my shoulders:

“Hey look! Carbonite Piggies!”

Record temps and broken limbs

Before I forget, I need to record the fact that we’ve been setting record highs this week: 23 degrees yesterday and 27 is expected for today!! It’s been low 20s all week. It is expected to drop and start raining over the weekend…but still in the mid teens.

With our trip to Mexico from Feb 23rd to March 2nd, our Winter (which was lame to begin with….I used the snow blower only one time and never shovelled my driveway) was basically over after Wonderboy. Crazy. Apparently the only real stormy stuff happened while we were away. We heard about it while vacationing and had a hearty chuckle about that.

With the weather comes new adventures. Olivia has upped her willingness to do things outside of her comfort level. At home, with help, she’s been learning how to get on the monkeybars and hang upside down. Yesterday at school she felt the need to explore the bars for the first time.

Well, she didn’t quite get the right handholds and fell down onto her right arm. After spending the day at the hospital, we came home with a daughter sporting a proud neon green cast that is holding her elbow at 90 degrees. The cast runs from the hand to the shoulder.

It is a non-displaced break on the outside of the elbow. In adults in wouldn’t have required a cast but with younger kids you are in the prime stages of bone development, so it requires immobilization for about 3 to 4 weeks. Hopefully 3. I got to see the xrays while they were being taken. It is incredible how developing bones work with the gaps and all. I kept asking the technician: Is that a break? Wow, look at that fracture! His calm responses were “Those are developing bones, not breaks”.

Not that it matters. The kid is loving it (for now) and milking it for all it’s worth. I got to sign the cast right where the break was. Obviously I’m one of the cool kids to be asked first!

So the weather is going to be rainy for a while. That’s good so she won’t feel like she’s missing out on too much. Today’s going to be tough though with a sunny high of 28. She’ll miss biking the most.
