Roach’s Mame Cabinet Saturday, Jan 7 2006
Family Life 9:38 am
Welcome to Arcade Nirvana! This arcade cabinet is equipped to play virtually any arcade game that was ever created. With the Mame engine powering this beast, it is possible to play all your favourite games from Pong to whatever game it is kids these days are playing in the Arcades. I’m a sucker for the classics like Pac-man and Asteroids so I haven’t kept up with the more recent games.
Here is the finished product:
Mame is short for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. It is software that enables you to play thousands of arcade games off of a PC regardless of the hardware that ran the game in the arcade. The emulator will ensure the playability, the sound, the graphics are identical to what was originally released commercially. For an indepth discussion of Mame and its sub-culture you can start by going to http://www.mame.net/.
For a nice refresher of many of the arcade games you may or may not have played over the past 35 years, go to http://www.klov.com/. There are plenty of screen captures to help you remember the games and the fun you had playing them.
Don’t forget to Email me at md@micheldesroches.com for any questions or if you’d like to discuss ordering one of these!
You’ll just have to believe that I built this arcade cabinet from scratch. I will explain the process I used from start to finish along with problems encountered and solved (or ‘quasi-solved’). First, here are some pics to show you the almost completed cabinet. I started this project Nov 1st with research, cut wood on Nov 15 and finished on Dec 23rd in time for Christmas:

Update! I upgraded my CPU to a P4 2.8 Ghz machine. 512MB of memory. Onboard sound which is sufficient. Had to upgrade the video card to a 64MB Radeon 7000 that I had in the old machine. Some of the scroller games would chug along when the buffer was filling. Now, the machine is rocking. Golden Tee, Smash T.V. are now playable along with most of the other games.

Hey Roach, my pal Neil is going to build himself a MAME cabinet.

Hi there. Do you have a mini version that could fit in my passenger seat?? I could probably put it in back and move the microwave oven up into the passenger seat. That would obviously suck for city driving but I could probably steer with my left foot and operate the pedals with my right while leaning back. I’m planning on some road trips this fall so it would be really handy for those long stretches! I’m sure the hitch-hikers would love it too. If you have something like this, please let me know the cost and dimensions.
Thanks,
Jason

Is there a slot for hot/cold running water? I’d like to install one of these in my downstairs salle de crap. I think it would fit nicely if it were overlayed with the sink and vanity fixture. A retractable mirror and swivel taps would be perfect to make it dual use. But the casing would obviously need to be waterproof. Oh, can I get it tinted? I’m re-doing the place in a super cool tinted motif. Oven, microwave, tv, washer/dryer, hamper, catbox…you name it. Tinted.

If you love poker then you should check out this amazing bar I found. It has everything you need to get started with playing poker and drinking liquor! It also has great pricing on chips, pretzels, and much more! It is located in Breslau, Ontario and is called the Doll House.
